Frequenty Asked Questions
What is a good age to start guitar lessons?
Everyone is different, but in general 8 years and older is good. Guitar can be physically challenging and frustrating for younger children. For children younger than eight I suggest starting off on Ukulele.
Do you teach Adults?
Yes! Whether you have never played before, haven't picked it up in a long time, or are an experienced player looking to take your playing to the next level I can help.
Do I need to own a guitar?
I do not supply guitars but I can give you information on renting a guitar. Renting can be quite inexpensive and is a good idea if you aren't ready to commit to buying a guitar or if you are not sure what kind of guitar would be best for you. I can also give you some advice on purchasing a guitar.
Is it best to start on acoustic or electric guitar?
Many people believe it is best to start on acoustic but I do not agree. If you (or your child) are primarily interested in electric guitar, then there is no reason not to start on the electric. In fact, many people find it easier to start on the electric guitar because it is generally easier to push the strings down. If you are primarily interested in acoustic styles (fingerstyle, strumming, folk etc.), then choose an acoustic guitar.
Do you teach classical guitar?
Yes. I am also a registered Royal Conservatory teacher and can arrange RCM examinations if you are interested.
Do I need to learn to read music?
No. In my lessons reading music (standard notation) is optional; it all depends on your goals and musical interests. In general, learning to read music is much more important for classical and jazz guitar. Whether you learn to read music or not, learning the notes on the fretboard and basic applied music theory is an important aspect of lessons.
How long are guitar lessons?
I offer 30 minute, 60 minute lessons.
When are you available to teach guitar lessons?
I teach Monday to Thursday and I have availability both during the daytime and in the evenings.
What styles of guitar do you teach?
I teach most styles (acoustic, rock, classical, jazz).
How do I pay for lessons?
Students pay by cash, cheque, or interact e-transfer.
Can I take guitar lessons online?
Yes. I teach lessons via Facetime or Skype. I prefer Facetime (usually better quality). It is important that you have a good internet connection for online lessons. I prepare lesson materials beforehand and email them to students.
